It’s a summer of festivals for Seventh Stage!

AT THE TORONTO FRINGE FESTIVAL:

Seventh Stage Theatre Productions Presents

The Workshop Production of

THIS IS ABOUT THE PUSH

By Rachel Blair

Directed by Kelly Straughan

Starring: Kimwun Perehinec, Jennifer Villeverde and Naomi Wright

This is About the Push is a collection of one-acts about the power dynamics of women and war, and the feminine identity projected upon them. Played out in varied styles of theatricality, each piece takes three nameless women ready to serve their audience, their men and their country and moves them closer to the final push.  Comic, quick and clever, each piece reflects on the next.

AT THE SUMMERWORKS THEATRE FESTIVAL:

Seventh Stage Theatre Productions presents

Or, by Liz Duffy Adams

Directed by: Kelly Straughan

Cast: Damien Atkins, Sophie Goulet and Melissa-Jane Shaw

Having developed a relationship with NYC’s renowned Women’s Theatre Project, Seventh Stage was passed along Liz Duffy Adam’s Or after its successful run at WTP. Or, begins as Aphra Behn is making the transition from the spy trade into show biz, if only she can write her play without interruptions from her love life! While war and plagues rage, Aphra and King Charles II – along with his renowned mistress/famed actress Nell Gwynn – all celebrate free love, cross-dressing and pastoral lyricism.

During a time when women could barely brace the stages, let alone write for them, Or, paints a whimsical portrait of a post-Apocalyptic time of cultural and sexual revolution, making the 1660s look a lot like the 1960s. Historically, Aphra Behn is capped as the world’s first prolific professional female playwright; ‘pretty-witty’ Nell Gwynn as the earliest English actress to receive prominent recognition; and, Charles II as the ‘Merry Monarch’ for the liveliness and hedonism of his court. Collectively, this bold and brazen threesome aided in ‘restoring’ enjoyment and folly to a previously repressed society.
